Entrepreneurs Reach Realty Niches Through Net
Many Web surfers looking for a home visit REALTOR.com and other big listing sites, but niche sites are also attracting shoppers, and in their own way doing their bit to help drive up homeownership rates.
These niche destinations target people of a specific age, income, ethnicity, or sexual orientation as well as those looking for a particular home type, such as in retirement communities or golf-course developments.
GayRealtyNet, for instance, helps connect gay and lesbian home buyers with similarly minded realty agents, who pay $300 per listing to post information on the site. There also are specialty sites for buyers looking to live in golf-course communities or along an airport runway.
"The more general sites in their attempts to serve everyone don't serve anyone very well," remarks David Hehman of EscapeHomes.com, which showcases vacation- and second-home listings. "Sites that recognize this and specialize are ahead of the game."
