The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORSŪ has teamed with eight other business organizations to run a full-page ad in the Wednesday edition of Washington Post and USA Today, urging Congress to pass a recovery plan. (See House to Vote Friday on Rescue Bill)

"Our Representatives and Senators in Washington, D.C. cannot stand by as many Americans are finding it more difficult to get home mortgages, secure car loans and borrow money to send their children to college," the ad says. (View PDF of Ad)

"The financial collapse is threatening ordinary Americans' retirement savings and small businesses across the nation. We must restore confidence in our economy. Congress must pass a recovery plan now."

Direct Line to Congress

The ad tells readers to "Contact Congress Today," by calling 202/224-3121.

A phone call may indeed be the best way to get through to lawmakers, as the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday put a limit on the number of incoming e-mails due to fears the House Web site would crash.

On Thursday, the ad is scheduled to run in more newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and Orlando Sentinel.

NAR sponsored the ads in partnership with The International Franchise Association, National Association of Home Builders, National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, national Federation of Independent Business, National Restaurant Association, National Retail Federation, The Real Estate Roundtable, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

NAR Mobilizes Members

Also in efforts to push Congress forward on approving a financial recovery plan, NAR deployed a "Call to Action" to all members on Tuesday.

An e-mail from NAR President Dick Gaylord spelled out why the Emergency Economic Stability Act is so important to real estate, and asked members to contact their representatives to voice support.

"REALTORSŪ know better than anyone else how important housing is to our local and national economies. Like it or not, the housing market can’t rebound until we resolve the problems in the financial markets. Now is the time to act before they move beyond repair," Gaylord said in the e-mail.

Members should check their e-mail for the Call to Action e-mail. If they did not receive one, they can access the REALTORŪ Action Center online to send a message to Congress.
