Helena, Mont., has been named a 2009 Ambassador City by the National Association of REALTORS® and the U.S. Conference of Mayors for the Helena Area Housing Task Force. The task force is working to address Helena’s current and future housing needs.

The Helena Area Housing Task Force intends to prepare a comprehensive housing affordability strategy for the city to replace a previous plan. The housing affordability strategy will begin with an assessment to identify city’s affordable housing needs. That assessment will help the task force establish housing priorities and recommend affordable housing projects to the city and its partners. The task force hopes to update the housing affordability strategy annually.

“REALTORS® build communities and through successful partnerships are often better able to address critical housing issues in many of our communities,” said NAR President Charles McMillan. “The Helena Area Housing Task Force should be commended for the work it is doing to identify and advocate effective solutions to Helena’s affordable housing needs."

The Helena Area Housing Task Force is jointly led by the city of Helena and the Helena Association of REALTORS®. Other task force members are the Rocky Mountain Development Council, Helena Housing Authority, Helena Building Industry Association, Downtown Helena Business Improvement District, and local banks, title companies, and appraisers.

At an event this past weekend, REALTOR® Wendy Furth, NAR liaison, Housing and Diversity, joined Dustin Joyce, Council for the New American City, to present the Ambassador for Cities plaque and a $5,000 check to Helena Mayor James E. Smith and 2009 HAR President Steve Netschert.

The Ambassadors for Cities program was launched in 2003 by NAR and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, through its Council on the New American City. The program encourages cities and REALTOR® associations to form partnerships to promote homeownership and affordable housing opportunities.
