The Season for Gift-Giving, Real Estate Style
When clients close on a home purchase, their real estate agent typically marks the occasion with a personal gift. According to a 2009 REALTOR® Magazine reader profile survey, the gesture is an expression of thanks; and practitioners fork out more than $50 on average to show their appreciation -- although in some states the law limits them to no more than $25.
Besides celebrating a finalized transaction and saying thank you for a client's business, some agents use gifts as a way to promote themselves.
For example, Phil Puma of Charlotte, N.C.-based Puma & Associates Realty presents new homeowners with an address stamper bearing not only the location of their new residence but also his company's brand. "The good thing about it is that our name is in front of them for years to come," he notes.
Gifts can range from something as basic as a Home Depot or Lowe's gift card or a bottle of wine to novelty gifts like a fudge replica of the house.
