Health Problems Linked to Chinese Drywall
In its second review of Chinese drywall, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has found a “strong association” between imported drywall and corrosion of pipes and wires.
This second report released Monday also found a “possible” link between health issues reported by home owners and levels of hydrogen sulfide gas emitted from the wallboard coupled with formaldehyde, which is commonly found in new homes.
The commission says it can now pursue additional studies to find ways to effectively remediate the problem. It also cautioned that some of the problematic drywall could be American-made.
“It depends on what [drywall] is made of, not necessarily the country where it came from,” says Jack McCarthy, president of Environmental Health & Engineering Inc., the company hired by the government to perform air-quality tests.
