NAR TO DISTRIBUTE EPA GUIDES TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Chicago (June 16th, 2004) – The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® has made available two guides to inform REALTORS® and consumers on the potential dangers of lead and radon: “Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home” and the “Consumer’s Guide to Radon Reduction – How to Fix Your Home.”

Lead and radon are two serious issues in housing. Lead from paint, chips, and dust can pose serious health hazards if not taken care of properly; radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. By offering these informational EPA guides, NAR offers its members an opportunity to educate themselves and their clients about these hazards.

“Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home” educates consumers who own or are renting structures built before 1978 about the potential hazards of lead-based paint and other sources of lead contamination. The “Consumer’s Guide to Radon Reduction” is designed for those who have or may have a radon gas problem in their home, providing general information about the hazards of radon gas and reviewing a variety of reduction methods. These EPA guides are useful as a quick reference for agents and as a means of providing authoritative information to current and prospective homeowners and tenants.

“Radon and lead continue to be a presence in many homes in the U.S. These guides help REALTORS® and the general public better understand the effects and remedies for these hazardous elements,” said Bob Goldberg, NAR Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development.

Both guides are now available for purchase. Visit www.REALTOR.org/Store or call 800-874-6500 and select option ‘1’.
