Safety Week 2007

President's Message

Dear Association Executive, Broker, and REALTOR®,

"Local REALTOR® Attacked and Robbed on the Job" — that was the headline of a report on a local Sacramento news broadcast on June 4, 2007. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The exact same thing can happen to your members if they aren’t prepared.

Every day REALTORS® across the nation put themselves in positions where they can be victims of dangerous crimes. Whether it’s putting up signs along the highway or showing a house to a prospective buyer, their personal safety is often at stake. Yet most REALTORS® don’t think about the potential dangers until it’s too late.

Empowering REALTORS® to recognize risks and protect themselves — both on the job and off — can make the difference between life and death. We must work together to keep our members safe and successful.

September 9–15, 2007 marks the fifth annual REALTOR® Safety Week. NAR once again is providing you with a new REALTOR® Safety Week Kit to help you plan now to educate your members about potential dangers and how to avoid them. This year, we also added a few new resources to help reach all 1.3 million of our members:

  • For the first time ever, NAR is offering an online safety course, to be delivered through REALTOR® University. The course will be live in late July.
  • We have revised and updated the NAR safety video with practical tips to help our members minimize risk on the job, at home, or on the road.
  • We also are sending the REALTOR® Safety Week Kit to the top 500 brokerages and asking them to help spread this important information to our members.

All of these resources, information, and the contents of the Safety Week Kit are available in this section. I ask you to take some time to review this information and make plans now to promote REALTOR® Safety Week this September. And please continue to conduct safety training for your Association throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Pat V. Combs
President, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®
