November 2011 Ethics Training Resources Work Group Final Report

Work Group Purpose

To provide resources that will help associations administer and implement the REALTORS® Code of Ethics Training Requirement, formerly known as Quadrennial Ethics Training.

Background

The 2010 AEC Quadrennial Ethics Training Review Work Group, which was formed to review procedures for administering and implementing NAR’s Quadrennial Ethics Training requirement and to determine if and how the procedures could be enhanced, recommended that an ethics training toolkit be developed.  This recommendation, along with nine other recommendations submitted by the work group, was approved by both the Association Executives Committee and the Professional Standards Committee.

The work group further recommended that the toolkit include correspondence templates, calendars, NRDS record-keeping guidance, the role of leadership, the role of state associations, incentive examples to encourage members to complete the training prior to the last year of the quadrennial, examples for promotion during each cycle, social media applications, success stories, myth busters, etc.

The 2011 AEC Ethics Training Resources Work Group was formed to implement this recommendation.

Meeting Activity

The work group met during the AE Institute in Dallas and during the Midyear Meeting in Washington, D.C.  Three teams were formed to brainstorm the kit contents in the following three areas:

  1. Promotion and Communications
  2. Administration
  3. Training Tools.

Following the 2011 Midyear Meetings NAR staff began compiling the online toolkit.  Staff put out a call for sample materials asking associations to submit sample letters, procedures, promotion materials, templates, etc., so they could be shared with others via the toolkit.  These materials, along with existing NAR resources, were compiled into the Code of Ethics Training Toolkit for AEs, which now resides on REALTOR.org.

During the 2011 REALTORS® Conference meeting, just before the toolkit went live on REALTOR.org,  the work group reviewed the toolkit contents and offered some final recommendations on additional components for inclusion. The toolkit is a work in progress and associations are encouraged to submit more sample materials, as that is one of the most valuable aspects of the toolkit.
