AEC Profile Survey Work Group
May 2009
Work Group Objective
To update the Local Association Compensation Profile Survey questionnaire, and the Local Association Administrative Profile Survey questionnaire; to assist with marketing the Profile survey to ensure a high response rate and valid statistics that become the baseline for industry standards in REALTOR® association management compensation and benefits, and administration
Background
Every two years, the AEC conducts a local association administrative survey and a local association compensation survey. To ensure the questionnaires’ relevancy, the Profile Survey Work Group reviews both survey questionnaires and updates them before they are disseminated. These surveys are administered by an outside vendor to ensure the confidentiality of the responses. The responses do not come to NAR.
The first meeting of the 2009 work group was at the 2009 Midyear Meetings in D.C. At that meeting, the work group offered input on the report from the Administrative Profile Survey focus groups, which were held during the 2009 AE Institute. The group also reviewed a draft report of the 2009 Administrative Profile Survey results, and a draft of the 2010 Compensation Profile questionnaire.
Meeting Activity
The work group offered input on the Administrative Profile Survey focus group report, which contained feedback from focus groups that met during the 2009 Association Executives Institute. Some of this input included the following:
. Participants were unfamiliar with the Administrative Profile Survey by name
. Participants were not using the results
. The survey is too long and too time-consuming; requires too much research to complete
. Participants are more likely to respond to short surveys (5-10 questions)
. Respondents don’t think the Administrative Profile Survey has much to do with day-to-day operations
In addition to reviewing the focus group results, the work group reviewed a draft summary of the 2009 Administrative Profile Survey. The survey was conducted between February 3, 2009 – March 6, 2009, and yielded 167 responses, as compared to the previous Administrative Profile Survey which was conducted between December 13, 2006 – January 15, 2007, and yielded 363 responses. Due to the low response rate of the latest survey, several of the questions were statistically invalid.
The group considered this drop in participation when reviewing the focus group results, as it equated to unreliable and statistically compromised data. The group determined that the lack of statistical value in the current response rate, coupled with the focus group report, along with the current on-line environment that provides instant access to information at the click of a button, signaled that the Administrative Profile Survey may have run its course. The group made the following recommendation that will go forward to the AEC in November:
“That the Local Association Administrative Profile Survey be discontinued.”
The group suggested that in lieu of the Administrative Profile Survey, short, topical surveys be disseminated on an as-needed basis to local AEs.
Compensation Profile Survey Questionnaire Review
The group broke into two groups to review the questions in the Compensation Profile Survey. The groups shared their input, which staff will incorporate into the questionnaire and route back to the work group for additional feedback.
Next Steps
The additional work group feedback on the Compensation Profile Questionnaire will be shared at the group’s November 2009 meeting in San Diego. Marketing and promotion ideas for the Compensation Profile Survey will also be discussed at that time.
