"Connecting with Leadership, Members, and the Public" Speakers
Terry Watson
ABR, ABRM, CFS, CRB, CRB, DREI, e-PRO, LTG, SRES
Terry Watson is founder and president of Watson World, Inc., a consulting firm and broker for his family’s real estate business. After selling for franchises while in high school, he reached the status of “top” salesperson before age 25. No matter what Terry does, he puts all of his energy into it. This is probably why he is the youngest person ever to be inducted into the Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR) Hall of Fame. Terry holds the CRS, CRB, CIPS, ABR, ABRM, LTG, GRI, SRES, CFS, DREI, At Home with Diversity designations.


Keith Garner
Keith Garner is the Vice President of Information Technology Services at NAR.  Prior to NAR, he was a consultant for Stragetic Technology Resources in Chicago; a Technical Architect for Resource Information Management Systems in Naperville, Illinois; and system administrator for The Net Squad, a startup company. Keith lives in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997. Living in Chicago for most of his life, he is a Cubs fan, even though the “Billy Goat” curse is still at work.


Saul Klein
Saul Klein is the CEO and President of InternetCrusade and CEO Point2 Technologies. He was the 1993 President of the San Diego Association of REALTORS® and selected by the National Association of REALTORS® in 2003 as one of the “25 Most Influential People in the Real Estate Industry,” and one of the “100 Most Influential Real Estate People” by Inman News for the last three years. Saul is also one of the creators and moderators of numerous online real estate communities (AETalk, RealTalk, MLSTalk and others), reaching more than 65,000 online citizens every day through RealTown.com.


Hilary Marsh
Hilary Marsh, Managing Director, Editorial Development for REALTOR.org, is a Web content guru. Before joining the National Association of REALTORS , Hilary led Content Company, an online consultancy specializing in Web content strategy and management. Among the clients were the American Hospital Association and the University of Chicago. A frequent national speaker on Web content issues, Hilary founded NetContent/Chicago, and is a founding member of CM Professionals.


Michael Thiel
Michael Thiel, Associate Counsel, has been with NAR since 1981 when he joined the staff as a policy analyst in what is now know as the Board Policy and Programs Division of NAR. Mike joined the Legal Affairs staff in 1987 and focuses primarily on issues related to trademarks, copyrights and NAR governance. Mike received his B.S. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his J.D. degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1988. He also received his LL.M. degree in Intellectual Property from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He is admitted to the state bar of Illinois and the U.S. patent bar. He is a member of the American, Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations.


Nancy Friedman
Nancy Friedman, the Telephone Doctor, is America’s most sought after speaker on customer service and telephone skills. She has appeared on programs with Colin Powell, Lou Holtz, Pete Rose, Bobby Knight, among many other prominent speakers and has been published in the Wall Street Journal. Nancy’s appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, and The Oprah Show, along with hundreds of other radio and TV programs. She is the author of five best selling books. Her theatrical and advertising background helped bring her a thriving career in public speaking on her favorite topic – customer service and communication skills.


Steve Francks, RCE, CAE
Steve Francks began his employment at the Washington REALTORS® in April 1997 as Director of Education and was promoted in 2000 to Chief Executive Officer. As CEO, Steve oversees administration, communications, government affairs, member services and professional standards, in addition to the education program. In 2005, he served as president of the Washington Society of Association Executives, and was awarded the “Association Executive of the Year. Steve has earned the RCE and CAE designations.


Linda Schactler
Linda Schactler is a public affairs consultant in Olympia, Washington, who helps clients achieve public policy goals. Since 2001 she has provided legislative and media consulting services to the Washington REALTORS®, helping to launch and implement the successful "Quality of Life" campaign. Formerly she served as Director of Communications for the state Senate Majority Leader, was the deputy director of a state agency, and worked both in radio and television as news anchor and reporter.


Lynn Madison
Lynn Madison’s involvement in the REALTOR® arena spans over 22 years. She has been a multi-million dollar producer and VP of Training for two of Chicagoland’s largest companies and now owns her own brokerage company and training company. At the National level, Lynn has served on over 15 committees and currently serves on the NAR Professional Standards Committee. She has been a speaker at the NAR Convention since 1993, and is a licensed CE instructor in over 30 states. Lynn’s recognitions include REALTOR® of the Year from her association in 2003, induction into the REBAC Hall of Fame in 2004 as well as numerous Educator of the Year awards.


Marsha Petrie Sue
Marsha Petrie Sue is the Mohammad Ali of communications. She can dance, look pretty and she uses the entire ring. Marsha also knows how and when to land a knockout punch. Mark Allen, RCE, CRS, CIPS, GRI
Mark is the Chief Executive Officer of the Minneapolis Area Association of REALTORS®, a position he has held since 1998. He is also the chief executive officer of 10K Research, a firm providing research and reporting services to real estate organizations worldwide. Prior to his employment at MAAR, Mark worked in various aspects of the real estate industry, culminating as a managing partner of a large real estate brokerage company. Mark has earned the REALTOR® association Certified Executive (RCE), Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), and Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) designations from the National Association of REALTORS® and the Duke University Certificate for Nonprofit Management.

Alec Hagerty, ABR, ABRM, C-CREC, CRB, SRES
A licensed broker for over 28 years, Alec now spends at least half of his time educating and training real estate licensees nationwide. He is also an Instructor on the faculty of the Ohio Association of REALTORS®, the Real Estate Buyers Agent Council, and the National Association of Real Estate Consultants. Alec is now an Associate of RealtyU. In 1997 was honored as the "Ohio Instructor of the Year" by the Ohio Association of REALTORS®. In 1999 he was awarded the prestigious "DREI", "Distinguished Real Estate Instructor" Designation by the National Real Estate Educators Association. Alec has earned the ABR, ABRM, C-CREC, CRB, and the SRES designations.

Keith Holm, RCE
Keith Holm is the Executive Vice President of the St. Paul Area Association of REALTORS®, St. Paul, Minnesota. He has served as EVP of the association since 1982. Prior to that time, Keith was the Director of Member and Board Services for the Wisconsin REALTORS® Association. Keith has served on numerous NAR Committees and work groups, including MLS, Member Policy, Finance, Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. In 2005 he served as Chair of the NAR Association Executives Committee. His favorite place to be is at his lake home on the south shore of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin.

Steve Murray
Steve is the editor of REAL Trends, Inc., the leading provider of strategy and trends information in the residential realty services business, and president of Murray Consulting, Inc. He has over 28 years experience in the residential real estate field, including responsibilities with leading relocation management, national franchise and asset management firms in prior years. Steve also manages the activities of five CEO groups and has played a significant role in several national studies.


Laurene K. Janik
Laurie Janik, the General Counsel for the National Association of REALTORS®, has been with NAR since 1977. As General Counsel, she is responsible for assuring that the programs, policies, and activities of NAR comply with the law and for defending the association against legal challenges and initiating litigation to protect and preserve association assets and policies as necessary. Laurie is a frequent speaker at REALTOR® association meetings and is well-known for helping association presidents and executive officers better understand legal issues and responsibilities. She received her B.A. degree from Northern Illinois University and a Doctor of Law degree from Loyola University in Chicago. Laurie is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Illinois Bar, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She is a member of several bar associations.


Jerry Giovaniello
Jerry Giovaniello is senior vice president of government affairs & chief lobbyist of the National Association of REALTORS®. Jerry manages the association’s government affairs staff of approximately 50 people in Washington, D.C. and serves as NAR’s lobbyist for members of Congress from California, Washington, Nevada, Hawaii and Oregon. Before joining NAR in 1981, Giovaniello was chief of staff for two members of Congress from California, taught political science for the Claremont Colleges in California and was a policy analyst and writer for National Journal.
He served as an officer in Vietnam and Washington, D.C. from 1968 through 1970.

Rita C. Johnson
Rita Johnson is a consultant with Pranix Consulting, Inc. Pranix provides services to real estate associations, MLSs and brokerage firms. Prior to joining Pranix, Rita served as the President and CEO of TREND, the 33,000 member regional Multiple Listing Service in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Rita has more than twenty-five years of experience in the MLS business, and has worked with many REALTOR® associations and regional MLS organizations across the country.


Russ Bergeron
Russ Bergeron has been the Chief Executive Officer of the Southern California Multiple Listing Service since its formation in 1993. Under Russ’ leadership, SoCalMLS has grown from serving 7,000 to nearly 50,000 real estate practitioners and enjoys a nationwide reputation of excellence. He is recognized as a pioneer in the movement to place real estate listings on the Internet for which he won the Inman Innovator Award in 1998.

Karen Kage
Karen S. Kage is the Chief Executive Officer of Realcomp II Ltd., Michigan’s largest REALTOR®-owned Multiple Listing Service located in Farmington Hills, Michigan.  Karen first entered the world of real estate over 30 years ago as a statistical typist at a local Board of REALTORS®, and became CEO of Realcomp in 1998. Karen is now responsible for overseeing a staff of approximately 40 employees and providing premier MLS and real property data-related services to more than 12,000 REALTOR® members in Michigan.


Jeff Turner
Jeff Turner is President, COO and Founder of RealEstateShows.com and has over twenty years experience as both a successful entrepreneur and a senior executive in a large corporation. As company founder and CEO of J.J. Grace, Inc., he led his company to being named to the Inc. Magazine list of the 500 fastest growing companies in America and in the following year won Cisco’s Growing With Technology Award recognizing innovative companies networked for growth. His insights and knowledge, are integral to how Real Estate Shows designs and delivers breakthrough sales communication.

Jay Thompson
Jay Thompson is the Broker / Owner of Thompson's Realty in Phoenix, Arizona. Thompson's Realty has no brick & mortar presence, but operates as a "virtual brokerage". He is the founder of PhoenixRealEstateGuy.com and contributes to several real estate weblogs. Jay has conducted numerous real estate blogging seminars, has been quoted in BusinessWeek, U.S. News & World Reports, and is often called upon local television news reporters to opine on the Phoenix real estate market. Approximately 95% of his real estate business has been built through blogging and social media. Jay employs no "traditional" marketing or prospecting methods.

Mariana Wagner
Mariana Wagner is a REALTOR® in Southern Colorado and co-owner of the Keller Williams Realty Wagner iTeam with her husband Derek. The Wagner iTeam is one of the top producing teams in the area, with almost 100% of their new clients coming from their website http://www.ColoradoSpringsRealEstateConnection.com. Mariana is an active real estate blogger and trainer and technology coach for Keller Williams International, where she helps real estate agents increase their business through effective online lead generation.

 

Marilyn Wilson
Marilyn Wilson is among the leading real estate technology consultants to Associations and MLSs alike. Prior to founding WAV Group with her partners, Marilyn served as a Senior Executive of Marketing, Business Development and Strategic Planning with Fisher-Price and Mattel brands and as CEO of a technology company, Surveyor. Marilyn has lead many strategic discussions for Associations and MLSs to understand the fruits and challenges of MLS Consumer Websites. In 2008, Marilyn and the WAV Group published the most comprehensive industry case study on the topic titled MLS Consumer Website Effectiveness Study – downloadable at no charge from http://www.wavgroup.com. Errol G. Samuelson
Errol Samuelson has served as president of REALTOR.com® since February, 2007 and president of Top Producer Systems since August, 2003. Mr. Samuelson has been with Move, Inc. since 1999, holding key management positions in marketing and product development, including director of international marketing and vice president of product strategy. Prior to joining Move, Inc., Errol was director of sales, marketing and product management at GTE Enterprise Solutions.

Michael Wurzer
Michael Wurzer is the President and CEO of employee-owned FBS Data Systems, which makes the flexmls Web system used by over one hundred MLSs across country. Michael was 2008 Chair of the Real Estate Standards Organization, the membership organization responsible for overseeing the Real Estate Transaction Standard (RETS). Madeleine E. Abel, CPM®
Madeleine E. Abel, CPM®, serves as a Senior Vice President of the Institute of Real Estate Management and heads up the organization’s “green” initiatives. With more than 30 years of industry experience, she is Vice President, Property Management, for BECO Management, Inc, Rockville, Maryland. She began her commercial real estate management career with the Charles E. Smith Company and has been active in IREM at the national level since 1998. In addition to her current role as a Senior Vice President, she is a member of the IREM Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the IREM Foundation.

ROB AUTHIER, CAE, RCE, e-PRO
Rob has been the Chief Executive Officer of the 22,000-member Massachusetts Association of REALTORS® since March, 2005…which is his 15th non-consecutive year with MAR. He’s been a REALTOR® Association executive officer for more than 32 years. He has served as CEO of the Virginia Association of REALTORS® for nearly 12 years and was the New Hampshire Association’s EVP for five years. In 2007, Rob was a member of NAR’s Extended Leadership Team serving as Liaison to the Association Leadership Group. Rob chaired the NAR Association Executives Committee, the RCE designation Certification Board and served twice on the NAR Finance Committee and thrice on Strategic Planning. He is a 14-year “Sterling R” member of RPAC.

 

Gerald L. Allen, RCE, CAE
Gerald Allen is the Manager, Community & Political Affairs – Promotions, for the National Association of REALTORS® in Washington, D.C. Before joining NAR in 2002, Gerry was the Director of Legal Services for Hometest Inc., a Maryland-based environmental-testing company. He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, and the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association. He has earned the RCE and CAE designations.

Mary Martinez
Mary Martinez manages NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®' traditional and digital library collections. She has 18 years of experience in the real estate field, the last 10 years being at NAR's Information Central. In 2006 she received the Digital Pioneer Award for launching the Virtual Library eBooks Collection, a collection of 1,000 downloadable books, videos, and audio books. She earned her masters degree in library and information science from Dominican University.

Adorna Carroll, ABR, ABRM, e-PRO, GRI, SRES, SRS
Adorna Carroll, the owner-broker of Realty 3 Carroll & Agostini in Berlin, Connecticut, has been an annual multimillion-dollar producer since 1989. She is partner of Dynamic Directions Inc., an educational and sales training consulting firm. At the National level she has held numerous positions including Regional Vice President, RPAC Trustee, Vice President and Liaison to Committees, Political Fundraiser, and the 2007 Liaison to Real Estate Services. Adorna has been awarded five Who’s Who including “Who’s Who of American Women” and “Who’s Who in America.


Jerry Matthews
Jerry specializes in making presentations on future trends, facilitating strategic planning, executive coaching, and recruiting. During his 27 years of experience as CEO of the Illinois and Florida State REALTOR® Associations he created a vast array of new programs, products and services. In the last five years Jerry has made over 70 presentations on future trends, 90 strategic planning events, throughout the US and Canada. And he thoroughly enjoys the action – the debate – the creativity – the fun – of future planning and interactive presentations. Jerry holds the CAE designation as well as a Black Belt in Karate. Jerry received the NAR William Magel Award. He is a Professional member of the National Speakers Association.

Melynn Sight
We all know that marketing is important to big companies like Coke and Xerox, but what does it have to do with running an association? Many of us tend to think marketing is about selling, and that’s not something associations should be doing. Well, as you’ll hear from Melynn Sight, marketing an association is as natural – and just as important – as shaking hands with new members or asking long-time members how they’re doing.  Finally, Melynn helps associations understand the distinct groups in their audiences so they can communicate with them more effectively. Melynn has marketing degrees and 25 years of experience. She’s helped big corporate clients get their message across effectively, and now she’s following her passion for working in the nonprofit world to use the same skills to help associations.

Helen Carter, RCE, CAE, GRI, ABR, CIPS
Helen has been an association executive since 1993 with a very brief hiatus when she THOUGHT retirement was in her future! She is the proud recipient of the RCE and CAE designations, and also has been very active in the international arena having earned the CIPS designation and working closely as the Ambassador Association to Romania for three years. AND she was Dean of the AEI in Boston, one of the very biggest highlights of her career!

Jarrod Grasso, RCE
Jarrod Grasso is the Executive Vice President of the New Jersey Association of REALTORS® (NJAR) responsible for directing NJAR® in its mission to serve the professional needs of its members. For the past eight years, Jarrod was NJAR®’s chief lobbyist responsible for the tracking, revision and analysis of legislative issues affecting New Jersey’s real estate industry. He has many years of fundraising experience working with NJAR®'s RPAC Trustees. Jarrod holds the Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University and the REALTOR® association Certified Executive (RCE) designation.

 

Jane Saunders
Jane Saunders has been working with REALTORS® for 29 years. She
was the Senior Political Representative for the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® in Washington, DC for 11 years. Jane has worked to connect REALTORS® with their elected officials on the federal level; equipping them with the tools to be a voice for the real estate industry in Washington. Through Political Fundraising, Grassroots, Community Outreach and Legislative Programs, she worked extensively with state and local REALTORS and their leadership to advise and educate members of the real estate profession on how to be politically involved.

 

Donna Garcia
Donna Garcia is the Director of Human Resource Services and has been with the NAR since 1984. She joined NAR’s Legal Affairs Division, where she worked for 12 years. In 1996, she joined the Human Resources Division where she has gained extensive knowledge in employee relations, training, compensation and benefits administration. Donna received her M.S. Degree in Human Resource Management from Loyola University and obtained her certification in Organization Development in 2008. Donna is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRP); a certified facilitator for The Pacific Institute’s Investment in Excellence Program; and authors a Human Resources column called HR Connection in REALTOR AE Magazine.


Jonathan Wallace, Ph.D
Dr. Jonathan Wallace is no stranger to the issues facing Association Executives, having been one for more than 17 years. He has served as a Governmental Affairs Director and EVP of a local REALTOR® association, as well as state association EVP, and CEO of a multi-state trade association. Dr. Wallace earned both the RCE and CAE designations. He has graduate degrees in both Organizational Leadership and Human Resource Management, and received his Ph.D in 2006.


General Session Speakers

Alice Martin, RCE, CAE, GRI
Alice Martin began with the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® as Vice President, Association Executives and Leadership Development, in February 2008. In her role with NAR, she is based in Chicago and does outreach with state and local REALTOR® associations on leadership training, planning, NAR updates and programs, plus business issues and trends. Prior to her employment with NAR, Alice was with the Arizona Association of REALTORS® for 22 years, most recently as executive vice president. Alice is a former REALTOR®. She holds the REALTOR® association Certified Executive (RCE) and the Certified Association Executive (CAE) and the Graduate REALTOR® Institute (GRI) designations.


Gar Anderson
Gar Anderson is the Vice President of Outreach at the National Association of REALTORS® AE & Leadership Development. In this capacity, Gar travels the country to visit state and local REALTOR® associations to learn more about the issues they face and how NAR can help resolve them. Gar has been with the REALTOR® family for 21 years, the first 13 of which were spent with the Vermont Association. Gar makes his home in Stowe, Vermont, and is the proud father of a member of the U.S. Junior Olympic Ski Team.


Kathleen Passinisi
An internationally recognized speaker, humorist, medical professional, and author, Kathleen Passinisi brings substance, style, and clean hilarity to help you learn how to reduce stress, improve well-being, enhance creativity, and make life at home and work more fun! Kathleen is the recipient of the National Speakers Association Council of Peers Award of Excellence (Speaker Hall of Fame) and of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. She is the author of It's Your Life- Choose Well: Thoughts on Living a Happier, Healthier, Saner Life Now- Not Someday and contributed to Humor Me- America's Funniest Humorists on the Power of Laughter. She is the funniest woman in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri and quite possibly the Western Hemisphere.


Nido R. Qubein
Dr. Nido Qubein (Needo Coo-bane) came to the United States as a teenager with little knowledge of English, no contacts and only $50 in his pocket. His life has been an amazing success story. As an educator, he is president of High Point University, an undergraduate and graduate institution with 3,200 students from over 50 countries. To-date the Qubein Foundation has granted more than 600 scholarships, worth over four million dollars. As a business leader, he is chairman of Great Harvest Bread Company and serves on the boards of several national organizations including BB&T, a Fortune 500 company with 125 billion-dollars in assets, and the La-Z-Boy Corporation.
He has been the recipient of many honors including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans, the induction into the Global Society for Outstanding Business Leadership, and dozens more.

Christine DeRosa, RCE
As the Managing Director of Financial Information Systems for the National Association of REALTORS® , Christine DeRosa is responsible for the acquisition and implementation of financial systems for the association.  She also heads up the National REALTORS Database System (NRDS) and the REALTOR® eCommerce Network. Christine has been with NAR for more than 27 years, working in the technology area. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago.


Cindy Butts, RCE, CAE
Cindy Butts, RCE, CAE is the CEO of the Maine Association of REALTORS®, a position she has held for over twenty years. In addition, she is the CEO of a statewide MLS and manages several local boards. She's a past chairman of NAR's Association Executives Committee; and currently serves on NAR's member policy and strategic planning committees. Cindy also writes a blog on association management issues at cindybutts.com.


John Pierpoint
John Pierpoint is the Vice President of Finance and Comptroller for the National Association of REALTORS® . He has been in the Finance Division for 22 years. His responsibilities have included management of the Financial Reporting, Internal Audit, and Payroll/Benefits departments. For more than 12 years, he has also been responsible for the processing of NAR's cash receipts, including all dues revenue, and the application of NAR's dues policies and collection procedures.

 

Kristine Erickson
Kris Erickson has been with NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® in Chicago for nearly sixteen years – ten as a policy consultant with the Member Policy Department. She reviews local and state association governing documents and consults on NAR policy, and provides hands-on ethics and professional standards training for local associations. In 1998, Erickson took a hiatus from NAR and relocated to Traverse City, Michigan, where she gained hands-on experience “in the trenches” as office manager for a real estate firm. In 2002, she returned to NAR in her policy consulting capacity. Today, Erickson splits her time between Chicago and Traverse City, where she owns a home and sings with two choral groups.

 

Rodney M Gansho, RCE
Rodney Gansho joined the National Association of REALTORS® in 1990 as a Policy Review Coordinator. Since that time, he has worked exclusively in the Member Policy Department, most recently as Manager of Policy Information. Rodney is also the staff executive for the State Leadership Forum, Multiple Listing Service Forum, and Professional Standards Forum. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois. Rodney obtained his RCE designation in 2004.

 

Tricia Grace, RCE
After many years in the hospitality field, Tricia turned toward the association world. She spent two years with an association management company before being hired by the Kansas City Regional Association of REALTORS® . In the seven years she has been with KCRAR as Membership Manager, she has seen it grow from 6,500 to more than 10,000 members. Tricia earned the professional designation of REALTOR association Certified Executive (RCE) in November 2006.

Professional Standards Speakers

Clifford Niersbach, RCE
Cliff Niersbach joined NAR as a Policy Review Coordinator in 1975. Since then, he has held a variety of positions, currently as Vice President, Board Policy and Programs. He is the staff liaison to NAR’s Professional Standards Committee, Interpretations and Procedures Subcommittee, and Multiple Listing Issues and Policies Committees. He has worked with various study groups, task forces and presidential advisory groups, and has worked closely with NAR’s Strategic Planning and Structural Audit Committees, and the Code of Ethics Enforcement PAG. Patrick Reilly
Patrick is the Vice President of Member and Board Services at the New York State Association of REALTORS®. He was the Dean of last year’s AE Institute. Pat has been on several NAR committees including Membership Policy and Board Jurisdiction Committee, Professionals Standards Committee, Professional Standards Interpretations Subcommittee, and Association Executives Institute. Patrick is a Professional Standards Procedures Instructor and Professionals Standards Administrator instructor.

 

Richard K. Haggerty
Richard Haggerty is the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the Westchester County Board of REALTORS®. Richard’s association responsibilities include the coordination of professional standards and arbitration hearings for the Westchester Board, and he also oversees the administration of the Westchester Putnam Multiple Listing Service. Richard has been a speaker and instructor for the National Association of REALTORS® , as well as the New York State and Pennsylvania Associations. He is also a certified real estate instructor for New York State.
