Katrina Housing
REALTORS® Offer Housing to Katrina Victims
REALTORS® and associations across the country have launched efforts to locate vacant properties and other homes and commercial property that would be suitable to house displaced families from the hardest hit southern states.
Below are just some of the early efforts to provide housing for Hurricane Katrina Victims.
· NAR and Welcome Wagon have partnered to create a housing service for individuals and families. On this site, you may search through a comprehensive list of housing opportunities that are generously being offered to hurricane evacuees.
· InternetCrusade, a REALTOR VIP® Program Partner, operates a blog for REALTORS® and association executives. Visit the housing page.
· HurricaneHousing.net, launched by a group of Louisina REATORS working with federal response agencies, is working to collect data from owners who wish to post a listing of their housing offer.
· Disaster Housing Resources has launched a site to help victims find housing as fast and easy as possible.
· Department of Homeland Security's National Emergency Resource Registry allows organizations that have resources to offer, like housing, to upload the information to its Web site. Here's how it works:
- Go to the National Emergency Resource Registry at and click on “New NERR Members” in the blue box on the right, and you will see an application page.
- Fill out the required information then follow the directions to submit housing resources.
- Once you submit your housing information, government agencies will contact you if they are interested in renting or purchasing from you.
· The Louisiana Association of REALTORS® links members to a blog hosted by WWL-TV, the local CBS affiliate station, which provides news updates on the hurricane aftermath every few minutes.
· MoveOn, a group of grassroots political organizations, has sponsored HurricaneHousing.org to match homeless victims with available housing.
· KatrinaHousing.org is a housing services hub for Katrina victims where citizens can offer up housing space for victims. Hurricane survivors can search for available rooms, houses, apts, etc. This site is working in cooperation with support organizations.
· Nola.com, the affiliated Web site of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, offers discussion forums and chat rooms to share information about temporary housing that is available to displaced people, and how you can help.
· Craigslist.org operates a resources page for Hurricane Katrina survivors that find missing friends or relatives and find information about temporary shelter.
· RegisterYourHouse.com is a site launched by REALTOR® Victoria Moate to match private families (host families) who are offering free housing with people needing housing.
· The Houston Association of REALTORS has launched project “Make A Home,” which consists of a Web site to match property owners in the Houston are with displaced hurricane victims. Property donors can call the hotline number, 713-393-8732 or log on to www.har.com and click the Make A Home icon.
