How to Earn the CIPS Designation

US Practitioners | Non-US Practitioners| Association Executives

US Practitioners


Education
  • International Real Estate for Local Markets (two days) is a required prerequisite to the other courses. In addition to classroom offerings, "Local Markets" is available online at Realtor University.
  • Three one-day regional courses (choose three of the following four) and a financial analysis class courses are required and can be taken in any order:
  1. Europe & International Real Estate (one day)

  3. The Americas & International Real Estate (one day)

  4. The Middle East and Africa & International Real Estate (one day)
  5. Investment & Financial Analysis for International Real Estate (two days/HP-10BII calculator required; this course is waived for students who have passed the CCIM Intro, CCIM 101, or CRS 204 courses for a $100 fee.)

  • A multiple-choice examination is given at the end of each course. 70% or better is passing.

Designation Application

  • In addition to the CIPS courses, applicants must submit a designation application demonstrating experience in international real estate.

  • Three closed international transactions are required involving other cultures or countries, including those occurring in your local market. Documentation is required, along with answering specific questions regarding the transactions.

  • 100 points of elective credit are required, earned from speaking other languages, current NAR designations, years in the real estate business, attendance at international conferences and education sessions, and much more.

  • A one-time only processing fee of $225 is required with your application.

  • Applications are due by October 1 in order to be reviewed for approval in that year, and can be submitted before your coursework is completed.

Membership Dues
  • Annual CIPS Network membership dues are $220 for both candidates and designees in the US.

  • Students can become candidates upon completion of the "Local Markets" course. Once you declare candidacy, you have two years in which to complete the designation requirements if you wish to remain in the directory. Your courses will still count longer than two years.

  • Designees must maintain their dues annually in order to use the designation.

CIPS Network Benefits
  • Listing in the CIPS Network Directory, Who’s Who in International Real Estate. Designee listings include photograph and 150-word biography.

  • Listing in the CIPS online member directory

  • Subscription to Global Perspectives, a quarterly international real estate newsletter

  • Information on events and opportunities at NAR’s national convention

  • Current international real estate news updates

  • Invitations to exclusive business and networking events, and more!

Miscellaneous
  • Any one can take the CIPS courses but only members of NAR can join the CIPS Network and earn the designation.

  • An HP-10BII calculator is required for the Investment course. A regular calculator is required for all other courses (or the HP-10BII can be used).

  • The Finance and Investment course is waived for students who have passed the CCIM Intro, CCIM 101, or CRS 204 courses for a $100 fee.

  • Subscription to REALTOR Magazine, NAR’s monthly publication.

  • Information on events and opportunities at NAR’s national convention.

  • Current international real estate news updates.

  • Invitations to exclusive business and networking events, and more!

Miscellaneous
  • If you reside in a country where NAR has a Cooperating Association, you must be a member of that Association in order to join the CIPS Network/NAR and earn the designation. If you reside in a country where NAR does not have a Cooperating Association, you must agree to abide by NAR’s code of ethics and join the Cooperating Association if developed in the future.

  • Non-US members can join the CIPS Network/NAR as general international members in addition to pursuing the designation (provided they meet the criteria listed above).

  • An HP-10BII calculator is required for the Investment course. A regular calculator is required for all other courses (or the HP-10BII can be used).

  • The Finance and Investment course is waived for students who have passed the CCIM Intro, CCIM 101, or CRS 204 courses for a $100 fee.

    Association Executives

Education
  • Attendance at the one-day CIPS Administration Course offered annually in conjunction with AE Institute. This program discusses how to start an international member services program.

  • Three one-day regional courses (choose three of the following four) and a financial analysis class courses are required and can be taken in any order:
