National Association of REALTORS® and the China Real Estate Association
Beijing, China
September 2003

On September 21-22, 2003, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) worked on a joint program with the International Real Property Foundation (IRPF) to hold a forum on Association Management in China. About 60 association executives from national, provincial and local levels in China attended the forum in Haikou to learn practices and expertise used in US. Belton Jennings, the CEO of the Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association delivered the lecture and answered many questions raised by the Chinese counterparts. NAR and IRPF were introduced to the staff of the Chinese associations. During this historic event - the first forum ever held in China on the topic of real estate association management - some important concepts, such as lobbying and MLS, were explained and discussed with the Chinese association professionals. This forum will eventually benefit real estate professionals from both countries by helping association executives in China familiarize with US practices.

A three-country real estate conference was held in Beijing on September 25. Real estate practitioners from China, Korea and US participated in the successful meeting, which was conducted by means of three-way translation. Chinese counterparts were pleased to hear from NAR International Operations Chair Jim Ascot, CIPS, and Immediate Past Chair Gail Lyons, CIPS. More than 100 attendees including 50 delegates from the Korea Real Estate Brokers Association (KREBA) participated in the conference. Jim Ascot and Gail Lyons cut the ribbon at the Expo Ceremony and presented their speeches to the audience. They also took part in a panel discussion with several Chinese real estate experts. The event was highly publicized and many interviews were given to Chinese news agencies including the CCTV, Reuters, Xinhua News Agency and local media.

NAR and the American Bar Association (ABA) jointly hosted a forum in Beijing to discuss the issue of real estate brokerage laws and practices from September 26-28. Jim Ascot and Gail Lyons were invited as featured speakers at the meeting and participated in the panel discussions along with Chinese practitioners. The forum aimed at introducing US laws and business practices to Chinese practitioners and connecting the situation of the Chinese real estate market by having local brokers and lawyers directly involved. The meeting was considered very helpful to the Chinese market which is under tremendous development and expansion. It provided a platform for practitioners from both countries to communicate and exchange ideas. About one hundred attorneys and brokers/developers mainly from Beijing area attended this event at the Century Golden Resources Hotel in Beijing.
