Overview of NAR and MIPIM Asia
NAR will be participating in the MIPIM-Asia property marketing show in Hong Kong in September 2006. NAR is part of a new initiative supported by the U.S. Commercial Services area of the Commerce Department and managed by the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong.
The Commercial Services group has organized an “American Real Estate and Services” (AREAS) pavilion as part of the larger MIPIM show. They are working with U.S. state governments and private service providers to have an exhibit presence at MIPIM under the AREAS pavilion; promoting specific commercial, industrial, and residential real estate portfolios as well as highlighting services available to support real estate transactions. The Commercial Services group is actively working to attract Asian investors interested in the U.S. market.

NAR will be a “Silver Sponsor” for the pavilion, which provides co-branding at all AREAS events, access to consulate-hosted events, a speaker slot on the program, and other benefits. In addition, NAR is actively marketing the opportunity to the state REALTORŪ associations and large boards, encouraging participation as part of their state's economic development board delegation.
NAR’s function at MIPIM-Asia will be to educate Asian investors about the role of the real estate broker in U.S. property transactions and to promote, specifically, the use of a REALTORŪ. NAR is tracking REALTORŪ association involvement and will work to support REALTORŪ delegations. Specific details of NAR’s direct participation will be determined in early summer. The International Operations Division is managing NAR’s participation with involvement from the REALTORŪ Commercial Alliance.
In conjunction with this meeting, NAR International also hopes to organize a Leadership Summit with our Asian bilateral partners. We are also working with our bilateral partners to encourage their members to participate in this event in order to facilitate networking with U.S. REALTORSŪ who attend.
Why and How your REALTORŪ Association Should Participate
Why Participate in MIPIM Asia?
To date, 23 state governments have made commitments to participate. NAR is working with state REALTORŪ Associations to encourage and support their involvement with these state delegations. NAR will also have a presence in the pavilion. Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the U.S. has been on a steady rise. FDI in the real estate section is also growing; 2004 FDI in real estate was nearly $38 billion, the highest since pre-9/11 ($41 billion in 2000). The U.S. remains the top destination for foreign investors due to high capital appreciation combined with market stability and security.
AREAS is working directly with U.S. state governments to organize U.S. delegations. A letter has been sent to each state Governor inviting participation in the U.S. real estate services pavilion. NAR is supporting this effort and strongly encourages each state asscociation to explore opportunities for REALTORŪ representation in these state delegations.
Some REALTORŪ Associations may wish to participate directly, organizing their own exhibit and delegation. Others may prefer to be part of a state-wide delegation that represents a wide range of real estate service providers, including the brokerage community.
Regardless of which approach your Association may be interested in, we recommend you contact your Governor and/or the state Economic Development Board to inquire about plans for organizing a state delegation. If you learn that no delegation is planned for MIPIM-Asia, your Association may want to advocate for one, and offer to take the lead in organizing a delegation that represents a wide spectrum of the industry, i.e., brokerage, mortgage lending, construction, development, legal, etc. By taking a lead in organizing a delegation, you can work to ensure the group is “REALTORŪ-friendly.”
