Summer 2013: The Vitality of Small Communities
America's history is a testament to the unique joys of living in small communities like the neighborly connection and sense of community often missing in larger metropolitan areas. Across the country, community leaders are joining together to bring new life back to small towns. They are doing it by focusing on smart growth that highlights the existing assets of a community — its history, culture and landscape — or by creating a new source of vitality, such as by encouraging artists to flourish or by undertaking creative placemaking.
Increasing Housing Opportunities
The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® offers a variety of programs through which REALTORS®, often supported by state and local association programs and classes, can play an active role in facilitating home ownership and affordable housing for more Americans.
Shaping Communities
We are committed to the principles of "smart growth" which encourage sustainable community growth and planning with respect to transportation and land use issues, crowded schools, open space, and bringing vacant properties back to productive use.
Encouraging Community Leadership
We also believe strongly that our organization and its members should play an active role in other forms of community outreach. The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® gives several awards each year to REALTORS® working hard to improve the lives of those in their communities.
