Course Design
This course was designed to meet adult learning needs. Information and activities are presented for each major learning objective in the course.
The format addresses the major styles of adult learning by answering the following questions:
- What will I learn?
- Why must I learn this information?
- How can I apply this information?
- How can this information be used in my personal life or career?
Facilitation
The course is intended to be very interactive. It is the facilitator’s responsibility to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere so that learning can take place. As a facilitator, it is important to remember:
- Adults learn from one another. Group discussions with open-ended questions are effective in drawing out knowledge and experience.
- Treat adults’ feelings with respect when providing corrective feedback, or when commenting on their views, in public or in private.
The course manual intentionally contains a large amount of information. More information was included than can be covered in course so that the guide can serve as a reference after the course. You may find it necessary to skip some exercises or to review some of the material on a high level. If this should occur, remind the participants that they may refer to their guides for more information.
However, it is strongly recommended that you include the exercises entitled Stereotype Brainstorm in Section 1 of your Facilitator Manual on page 1-15, and Developing Inclusive Strategies in Section 8, pages 8-4 through 8-16.
The PowerPoint presentation that accompanies the course material provides an opportunity to present topics and activities. Because the course is highly interactive, the emphasis of the course is on learning activities and discussion. As a facilitator, you may add additional slides, but you are encouraged to limit the number.
At the conclusion of the course, distribute and collect the course evaluation forms. Give the evaluation forms to the sponsor, who will mail the forms to the NAR.
The Audience
This course is an educational opportunity for real estate brokers, agents, association executives, and anyone associated with the real estate industry.
Course Length
The course is structured into two sessions. Each session is approximately three hours. The exact length of the course will vary between six and eight hours depending on the number of participants and the number of exercises that are offered. The course can easily be expanded for participants who require more than six hours of training to earn continuing education credit. Note: Because of the length of this course, promptly begin each session and resume class after each break.
Instructor Compensation
The course sponsor is responsible for compensating the instructor.
Course Materials
NAR will provide all the course materials via computer disk.
The disk will contain the following documents:
- The facilitator (and participant) manuals
- The PowerPoint presentation that accompanies the course
- A student registration/certification application form
- An eligibility affidavit
- Certificate license agreement
- Course evaluation form
- Letter of course completion
- Sponsor and Facilitator Guides
Examinations
If you are offering the course for continuing education credit, and an exam is required for that credit, please contact NAR by e-mail at diversity@realtors.org or by telephone by calling 202-383-1201, for a copy of the exam.
Administrative Responsibilities
You and the sponsor will decide which administrative tasks will be your responsibility. These tasks include distribution and collection of course registration/certificate application forms, license agreements, and eligibility affidavits.
