Avoiding the Con in Construction
11/08/2014 | 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Morial Convention Center, Room 215
Construction projects are notorious for taking longer and costing more than expected. Sometimes practitioners do shoddy work. Other times scam artists take the money and run. And these costs are minor compared to expensive legal claims by injured, uninsured workers. We will provide insider knowledge about how to find, vet, and work with contractors so that projects are done correctly, on time, and on budget without undue exposure to risk.
Attendees will learn about:
1. Contractor licensing - what it is, why it is important, and how to verify licensure using government resources.
2. Contractor insurance - what types a contractor must have, why insurance is important, and how to verify coverage.
3. Common scams and pitfalls, including those associated with contractor payment, and the contracting practices/provisions that help to eliminate them.
Because so few people understand the business of construction, this industry has a high incidence of fraud, cost overruns, and legal issues. Learn to avoid costly mistakes by becoming a knowledgeable participant on your project.
