Federal Issues in Brief:
Affordable Housing Tax Credit
The Issue
Currently, tax incentives meant to expand the supply of affordable housing available to lower-income individuals do not exist.
What This Means for You
Increasing the supply of affordable and entry-level housing through tax credits to investors and developers will enable more families of modest means to become homeowners and to use the services REALTORS® provide.
Where it Stands Now
Congressmen Tom Reynolds (R-NY) and Ben Cardin have introduced H.R. 1549 along with a bipartisan majority of their fellow House Ways and Means Committee members. NAR and other coalition members seek additional cosponsorship.
A Senate companion bill will be introduced by Senators Santorum (R-PA), Smith (R-OR) and Kerry (D-MA).
