Saving energy, or “going green,” continues to be very important to homeowners. NAR research has consistently shown a considerable and growing market for energy-efficient buildings, and many of today’s consumers want more efficient and eco-friendly homes. According to the 2012 NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 86 percent of those surveyed said that heating and cooling costs were somewhat or very important when considering their home purchase.

Energy efficiency has become so important that Congress recently introduced legislation that would allow lenders to factor energy savings into their underwriting equations.
