Housing Opportunity Program

"Strengthening Communities and Workplaces by Promoting Employer Assisted Housing"

Rising housing costs create problems for workers who can't afford to live near their place of employment. NAR's Home From Work™ program encourages REALTORS® to become advocates for expanding housing opportunities. Specifically, the program teaches REALTORS® how to effectively promote workforce housing initiatives at the grassroots level and to work with public and private-sector employers to establish an employer assisted housing benefit.

Program Goals
The goals of the 3-hour Home From Work™ training program are to:
  • Provide NAR members with the tools they need to become advocates for expanding housing opportunities; and
  • Educate REALTORS® on the benefits of employer assisted housing and how to reach out to employers.

Through the Home From Work™ class, REALTORS® will learn:
  • The concept of employer assisted housing (EAH) and the effect a lack of housing has on both employers and employees.
  • The three EAH benefits they can offer employers:
    1. Home buying workshops delivered by REALTORS® and lenders
    2. One-on-one counseling offered by nonprofit groups
    3. Financial incentives (e.g., forgivable loans, gifts, or matched savings)
  • How to reach out to employers and develop an EAH benefit plan
  • How to conduct home buying workshops at the employer’s place of business
  • How to work with lenders to access flexible financing that can increase affordability
