Related State or Local Legislation
State and local legislation often mimic programs that have been enacted at the federal level. Local legislation could be exactly like the federal law but more often local statutes are construed to address situations that are unique to a particular state or locality. Development of this page will link major programs contained in recently enacted federal housing legislation to comparable provisions in state and local law.
State or Local Legislation
There are many state and local laws that provide innovative solutions for housing opportunity. This page will highlight these laws. If you know of a state or local law in your community that should be added here, please email Megan Booth at Mbooth@Realtors.org
VIRGINIA REQUIRES AFFORDABLE HOUSING PLANS
Legislation proposed by the Virginia Association of REALTORS® has been signed by the governor and will become law. The legislation requires localities, as part of their comprehensive plan, to "designate areas and measures for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of affordable housing which is sufficient to meet the current and future needs of residents of all levels of income in the locality”. While the state has required comprehensive plans for a number of years, there was no specification on what needed to be included in that plan. This provision will require local governments to be more focused on planning for their future housing needs.
