First Quarter 2000

Around the World

Since 1990, MIPIM, the International Property Market, (www.mipim.com) has been the place for the global real estate professionals to meet, network, exchange ideas, form alliances and make deals. The tenth annual four-day event is scheduled to March 8 to 11, 2000, at the Palais des Festivals, in Cannes, France. Ten thousand professionals from 55 countries and 3500 participating companies are expected to attend. As an NAR member, you can receive a 50 percent reduction in the registration fee (2 700 FF) by identifying yourself as such when you register. The discount is limited to the first 25 who register. MIPIM registration forms are available from CIPS Network Fax-On-Demand service 1-800-354-2831 (U.S./Canada toll free) or 1-732-544-2851 (International). Request document #606. To register using another registration form, simply write "NAR" clearly at the top of the order form to receive the discount.

Joan S. Miller, CIPS, West Palm Beach, Fl, JoanPBFLRE@aol.com, who attended last year's market, offers some tips for deriving maximum benefit from the MIPIM.

Preparation for the show is essential, if you are hoping to make the most of the contacts you will make there. I traveled with one entire suitcase full of packets on specific property I was exposing, plus promotional material on my area of South Florida. Top three things to do during show:
  • Attend seminars that will attract people in the target group you want to reach, i.e., resort developers: go to the seminar on this subject and network afterwards with the participants and attendees.
  • Study the registry of stand and booth participants and map out your plan of attack for the following day. The facility is so vast that you cannot possibly cover all likely prospects in one day.
  • Plan to attend a cocktail party each evening, and bring plenty of your business cards. (Too many people I met had run out of them.)
After the show, do follow-up mailing or email to the people you contacted about specific properties. I stapled each day's cards collected to a sheet for easy compilation of list for mailings, once I was back home. Most important advice: Don't go to MIPIM expecting to be on vacation. I worked as hard there as I do at home! It is an outstanding opportunity to widen your horizons and contacts throughout the World.
