A nationwide celebration of homeownership will take place during National Homeownership Month in June 2008. American Home Week turns 56 in 2008 and will be celebrated locally April 13-19, 2008. General Information
National Homeownership Month, (NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, 2007). - NAR's official guide to National Homeownership Month includes a press release, banner and postcard artwork, and information about NAR's other programs that support homeownership.
NAR joins nation in celebrating National Homeownership Month in June, (NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® Press Release, June 4, 2007).
National Homeownership Month, 2007 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America, (The White House - Office of the Press Secretary, June 1, 2007).
Homeownership Is a National Priority, (U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, 2006).
Historical Information
In 1952, Build America Better began as a program with the focus on re-energizing run-down neighborhoods.
The program's name was changed to REALTOR® Week in 1956, to distinguish REALTORS® from non-members, and to highlight the right to own property as one of the cornerstones of democracy.
In 1975, the name was changed to Private Property Week, in order to promote the basic human and constitutional right to own, use and transfer property.
In 1986, the name was changed to American Home Week, celebrating the constitutional right to own private property, and home ownership.
In 2002, National Homeownership Month was created to celebrate homeownership across the country.
