Whether you’re a new homeowner or you’ve been chief of your abode for decades, chances are you want to keep your home warm and cozy during the winter months, which also saves a nice amount of cash. And while all homeowners would love complete energy efficiency, the National Association of REALTORS® consumer website HouseLogic found that a typical family spends about a third of its annual heating and cooling budget on air leaks through unintended cracks and gaps in the home. Thankfully, HouseLogic has some DIY tips to keep as much warm air in your home as possible (and keep that dreadful cold air out). For example, homeowners should consider insulating around recessed lights, plugging open stud cavities (especially above dropped ceilings and angled ceilings over stairs), and weather stripping attic access doors (a 1/4-inch gap around pull-down stairs or an attic hatch can let in the same amount of air as a bedroom heating duct).
