McDermott: 'It's Been Fun"
CHICAGO (August 19, 2005) – Terry McDermott, in his final Leadership Summit presentation as CEO of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, urged association leaders to work together to achieve important legislative goals—including state protection of private-property rights.
“Collaboration is the name of the game,” he said. “The power of teamwork moves us forward. Together, I think we can do anything.”
McDermott, who’s retiring from NAR at the end of the year after serving in his post since 1997, outlined five challenges association leaders will face in 2006: passing state legislation to curb eminent domain abuses, enacting a new online listing display policy as negotiated by NAR and the U.S. Department of Justice, reacting constructively to the U.S. Government Accountability Office's inquiry into competition in the real estate industry, keeping banks out of real estate, and ensuring tax law changes are positive to REALTORS.
He also stressed the benefit of building coalitions with like-minded trade groups and organizations to overcome market challenges and reach legislative goals. "It isn't a matter of turf, it's a matter of getting the job done," he said.
Among the brightest prospects for REALTORS in 2006, McDermott said, is the passage of the Small Business Health Fairness Act. "We will pass health coverage legislation in '06."
Looking ahead to his retirement, McDermott said the first thing he’ll do is take a much-needed rest. “People ask me what I’m going to do,” he said, laughing. “I’m going to lie down—for probably two or three weeks!”
He commended all of the NAR presidents who have served during his tenure, and thanked the AE community for their contributions to the REALTOR movement.
McDermott closed his presentation on a sentimental note, summing up his nine years and thanking the audience of AEs and association presidents: “You're good folks, you're good leaders, and, God love ya', it’s been fun.”
