REALTORS® Help Oakland Family Realize Homeownership Dream

OAKLAND, Calif.—Thanks to the generosity and goodwill of REALTORS®, Beverly Loyo and her 2-year-old granddaughter, Shakara Tilghman, and Shakara’s mother, Sharleen Clark, 31, will soon experience the joy of homeownership. On April 15, Habitat for Humanity International and the National Association of REALTORS® teamed up with East Bay Habitat for Humanity to raise the walls of a Habitat house, located at 948 Palm Court, which will soon become home for the family.

NAR President Al Mansell, seated front center, enjoys a respite after NAR officers, REALTORS® from the San Francisco East Bay area, and Habitat for Humanity workers raise the wall on a Habitat home in Oakland, Calif. Other NAR officers include President-elect Tom Stevens, in red hat, and Treasurer Mike Brodie, in white shirt far right.
The wall-raising event kicked off the construction of a three-bedroom single-family home sponsored by NAR. Throughout the summer, REALTORS® from around the East Bay area will donate their time and talents to help build the house. Keys to the house will be presented to Beverly Loyo and family at a dedication ceremony preceding NAR’s annual convention in San Francisco, Oct. 28-31, 2005.

"REALTORS® take great pleasure in joining hands with Habitat for Humanity in helping to make the dream of homeownership come true for another deserving family. As a leading advocate for homeownership, affordable housing and private property rights, NAR is proud of the work Habitat is doing to help expand the ranks of homeowners", said Al Mansell, NAR president and CEO of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Salt Lake City.

NAR and its members help provide affordable housing opportunities for working families by building a Habitat house each year in the host city of its annual convention. More than 22,000 REALTORS® from all over the United States are expected to attend the October convention in which $10 of each registration fee will go towards the sponsorship of the Habitat home. In the past four years, NAR has sponsored Habitat homes in San Francisco, Chicago, New Orleans and Orlando.

“We at HFHI are very grateful for this expanding relationship with NAR. This partnership, in which Habitat homes are built in communities in this country and abroad, symbolizes the ever-growing global work of our organizations,” said Tom Jones, vice president, Habitat for Humanity International. “This now includes on-going efforts to rebuild homes in tsunami-hit countries in South Asia and the founding of the International Housing Coalition.”

With the steady increase in real estate values across the country, low-income families are being priced out of the market. A recent study by the California Association of REALTORS® indicates that the median price for a California home is $660,000 and the affordability index for the state is a mere 13 percent. This Habitat home will sell for $209,000, nearly $300,000 below the market price.

“We appreciate our partnership with the National Association of REALTORS® as we continue our mission to create homeownership opportunities for families with limited income,” commented Janice Jensen, executive director, East Bay Habitat for Humanity.

In addition to working in U.S. communities, REALTORS® contribute to Habitat for Humanity’s home-building efforts in other countries. Most recently, NAR launched a fundraising effort to support Habitat for Humanity’s tsunami disaster response efforts in South Asia. NAR collected more than $1.5 million in donations from REALTORS® and state and local associations. In previous years, NAR has contributed to the construction of homes in Brazil, Mexico, Poland and Australia.
