Help for people using Symantec Internet Security software:

If you are receiving a "FORBIDDEN" error message while trying to use our "Find an Association", "Find an Office" and "Find a REALTOR/Member" functions and you use Symantec Internet Security software, then this information is intended for you.

Our "Find an Association", "Find an Office" and "Find a REALTOR/Member" functions run on a different server than does REALTOR.org. The "Find..." application screens are framed within REALTOR.org global navigation. The "Find..." application server checks to see if the referring URL is from the REALTOR.org web server. If not, the user is given the "forbidden" error message. We implemented this check because automated screen scrapers and robots were going directly to the "Find..." application server and attempting to download our membership database (NRDS) and tying up the bandwidth, etc.

Symantec Internet Security software will "mask" the URL that you are coming from as you navigate to different pages on the Internet as a means to hide your web surfing activity. Internet Security is masking the fact that you came to the "Find..." server via REALTOR.org and so you fail our check, and you get the "forbidden" error message.

You can leave Symantec Internet Security program running and access these functions via REALTOR.org if you make one setting change:

Under "Options" for Internet Security, look for the tab or item called "Web Content" and change the setting identified as "Information about visited sites" to "Permit" instead of "Block".

You can then use the "Find..." functions at REALTOR.org and not give up the security you really want Symantec to provide to you, which is preventing someone from getting into your computer over the Internet.
