Dear Fellow REALTOR®:

Just two months ago, REALTORS faced one of our greatest challenges ever—the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Watching the destruction and misery unfold in the news media, I realized REALTORS® couldn’t just sit silently and witness the tragedy. Instead, we must do something to help our fellow REALTORS® put their lives back together. Within a few days of the hurricane’s landfall, I appealed to the nation’s REALTORS® to help. NAR kicked off the effort with a $1.15 million contribution to the REALTORS® Relief Foundation, with all of the proceeds going directly to the relief foundations established by the state REALTOR® associations in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

In late September I traveled to the Gulf Coast and met with REALTORS® and others whose lives were changed forever by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. I saw firsthand the incredible devastation—and the tears, broken hearts, and lost dreams—that no news report can ever convey.

Because of you and the generosity of the thousands of more than 13,000 REALTORS® like you, we were able to bring those people hope for a new start in life. The REALTORS® Relief Foundation had raised nearly $5.9 million as of Oct. 30, including those donations made at the REALTORS® Relief Foundation booth here at the Conference. Every penny of those funds is going to help people in need, REALTORS®, and others in the Gulf Coast who’ve lost their homes and businesses.

REALTORS® are a family. And when our family is hurting, there’s nothing we won’t do to help our own. Let me share with you a portion of a letter I received recently from a New Orleans REALTOR®.

Mr. Mansell, I have always believed that REALTORS are right next to good ministers and dedicated physicians when it comes to helping their fellow man. I feel you agree with me from the outpouring of love and caring you have shown us from NAR.

A little known quote that I think relevant is “We make a living from what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Our section of this great country is very thankful for what REALTORS® and the caring people of this world have given.

If you are one of the more than 13,000 REALTORS® and REALTOR associations who have contributed, I want to thank you for what you’ve done. Your spirit of generosity has shown the world what being a REALTOR is all about.

Sincerely,

Al Mansell
2005 President
