NAR's Katrina Relief Appeal Continues
2005 NAR President Al Mansell discusses NAR's initial relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Read the letter in its entirety below, along with instructions on how you can contribute to the relief effort.

Dear Fellow REALTOR®:
REALTORS® all over the nation are answering my appeal for emergency aid to help REALTORS® and other victims of Katrina. Within just a few hours of receiving my message, thousands have responded, contributing a total of $643,000 to the REALTORS® Relief Foundation. Added to the funds NAR already has pledged, the grand total is more than $1.5 million. I’d like to thank each and every REALTOR® and REALTORS organization that has responded so quickly.
The response is critical because the scope of the disaster grows every day. It will be many months before some refugees will be able to return home. Thousands of people, many of them REALTORS®, may be out of work for a long time. It’s very clear we are going to need every penny we can raise—and EVERY PENNY that we raise will make its way to someone in need. Not one cent will be spent on administrative costs.
In addition to raising funds, REALTORS® are working overtime. President-elect Tom Stevens and I traveled to the region Thursday to meet with REALTORS® affected by the disaster, but we could not make it to the Gulf Coast because of severe fuel shortages. However, we did have a chance to learn first-hand how REALTORS associations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas are working with the National Emergency Resource Registry within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to help locate spare inventory that could be used to house people displaced by the storm and its aftermath. This includes houses, condos, apartments, and mobile parks, as well as other space such as schools, churches, and empty commercial buildings.
In the days to come, REALTOR.org will carry news and information about what REALTORS® are doing and opportunities to help the victims of Katrina. Check out the latest at http://www.realtor.org/realtororg.nsf/pages/katrina.
Not all of us can help with the registry but there is something everyone can do something right now to help someone get back on their feet. Your contribution to the REALTORS® Relief Foundation will make a big difference to someone who is suffering in this disaster, someone who would do the same for you if the tables were turned.
You may make contributions online through NAR's secure Web site: www.realtor.org/relief.
If you prefer to mail your tax deductible contribution, make your check payable to the REALTORS® Relief Foundation and mail it to:
REALTORS® Relief Foundation
Attn: NAR Finance Division
430 N. Michigan Ave.
Chicago, IL

Please do it today. We’re going to be getting our assistance to people in need as fast as we can raise funds.
Sincerely,
Al Mansell
President
