REALTORS® Extend Tsunami Relief Project
Note: The Project's online donation site closed the week of Feb. 28, but donation checks can still be mailed to NAR for the Habitat for Humanity build.

CHICAGO (February 11, 2005) –The scope of the devastation caused by the December tsunami in South Asia and the critical need for transitional and permanent housing for millions of tsunami victims have prompted the National Association of REALTORS® to continue and expand its campaign to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity International to build “REALTOR® Villages” in four hard-hit countries.

“Habitat is building transitional housing as fast as it can to get displaced families out of overcrowded, disease-ridden refugee camps, but the needs far outweigh the resources at this time. Nearly 5 million people are homeless. Today we are announcing we are continuing the REALTOR® Tsunami Relief Project,” said NAR President Al Mansell, CEO of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Salt Lake City.

“We’ve met our initial commitment to Habitat in only one month, but we’re not going to stop. Thousands of REALTORS® all across the country have found it in their hearts to help people in need halfway around the world, and they want to do even more. REALTORS® proved once again that nobody puts people in homes better than we do,” Mansell said. In light of the critical need to build housing and the extraordinary response from REALTORS® across the country, the NAR president announced NAR will continue to accept contributions.

On Jan. 4, NAR established the project and later pledged to raise $1 million. As of 9:30 a.m. CST on March 1, NAR has raised $1,362,715 from 6,339 contributors.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am to be a REALTOR® today. We met our commitment to Habitat in record time. But we’re not going to stop. Many REALTORS® who haven’t done so want to contribute and others want to give more. We’ll keep raising money as long as REALTORS® want to help,” said Mansell.

All of the administrative costs of conducting the REALTOR® Tsunami Relief Project are being absorbed by NAR; 100 percent of all donations will go directly to Habitat for construction of the REALTOR® Villages.
