REALTOR® Tsunami Relief Effort Ends After Surpassing Goal
CHICAGO (March 02, 2005) – The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® has closed the REALTOR® Tsunami Relief Effort, which launched on Jan. 4, after generating more than $1.4 million in contributions from REALTORS®, REALTORS® associations, MLSs, private companies and the extended REALTOR® family.
The scope of the devastation caused by the December tsunami in South Asia and the critical need for transitional and permanent housing for millions of tsunami victims prompted NAR to partner with Habitat for Humanity International to raise funds to build housing in four hard-hit countries.
The original goal to raise $1 million—to help Habitat for Humanity International build 1,000 transitional homes in "REALTOR® Villages"—was surpassed within six weeks, causing NAR to extend the project through the end of February to allow individuals and organizations to continue to donate. All of the administrative costs of conducting the REALTOR® Tsunami Relief Project have been absorbed by NAR. All funds raised will go toward building "core houses" to help tsunami victims transition back into permanent homes.

“Habitat is building transitional housing as fast as it can to get displaced families out of overcrowded, disease-ridden refugee camps. Nearly 5 million people are homeless,” said NAR President Al Mansell, CEO of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Salt Lake City.
“Thousands of REALTORS® all across the country have found it in their hearts to help people in need halfway around the world. REALTORS® proved once again that nobody puts people in homes better than we do,” Mansell said.
