Foreign Investment in U.S. Real Estate

November 2006

The U.S. real estate market continues to attract investors from other countries. While U.S. real estate is appealing for a variety of reasons, foreign investors are most attracted to the free and open market enjoyed in this country. Investment activity from beyond our shores helps to stabilize U.S. interest rates -- helping to keep mortgage interest rates low, spurring business investment in commercial properties and enabling consumers to become homeowners.

The first report looks at the impact of private foreign investment on the U.S. economy in 2005, and pays particular attention to the impact on commercial and residential real estate markets. It examines the level of foreign investment in real estate companies through 2005 (the latest year for which data is available), and includes a breakdown of that activity by country.

The second report, produced in 2005, takes a look at foreign investment in one state -- Florida.
