How to Recruit Gen Y Talent
Recruiting Generation Y, the Internet Generation, who grew up with computers, MTV, and day care, requires a different set of tools than it does to attract older workers, says Don Kottick, a vice president for human resources consultant AlignMark Inc.
Gen Y, born after 1976, is the largest generation since the Baby Boomers. One-third are members of minority groups.
Kottick has these suggestions for reaching out to this tech-savvy, teamwork-oriented, and culturally concerned generation:
- Advertise where Gen Y will see it. Advertise on sites such as Craigslist, MySpace, and Facebook. Create an online presence showing pictures of your office with people having fun in their work environment. Let them know that your firm cares and is active in your local community.
- Emphasize the benefits. Gen Yers expect collegial work environments, attractive pay packages with good health plans, substantial time off and flexible work hours. They also want diversity in their responsibilities.
- Use other Gen Yers to recruit and interview. Gen Y recruits are sensitive to work-life culture and will want to know they’ll be working with other like-minded people.
- Make the path to success obvious. Gen Y recruits need to know what your expectations are for the job, so include a job description and let them know about the support systems in place to help them.
