N.C.: 1840 Home of Siamese Twins Put on Market
The Traphil, N.C., home and 27 acres that originally belonged to the conjoined twin brothers Chang and Eng Bunker, the original Siamese twins, is for sale for $650,000.
The Siam-born brothers built the house in 1840, before they married the Yates sisters Sallie and Adelaide.
The twins, who were one of P.T. Barnum’s most popular acts, were joined at the chest. After they married, they left the world of circuses and sideshows and became farmers and businessmen. Together they fathered 21 children.
The house has been vacant for the last five years and needs work, according to Steve Noga, the associate with Carolina Realty in Wilkesboro, N.C., who listed the property. One outstanding feature is the doublewide staircase, built for the brothers who stood side by side.
The house may qualify for tax credits available for historic structures, says Mike Stout, of Preservation North Carolina, a nonprofit group that protects and promotes places important to the state's heritage.
