Chinese Drywall Passes Early Tests
Chinese drywall releases more sulfur gases and strontium than drywall made in the U.S., but in a report released Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission stopped short of blaming it for the health problems and metal corrosion reported by at least 1,900 homeowners.
The CPSC has been in talks with the Chinese government over liability for the cost of repairs. No agreement appears to have been reached, although CPSC Chair Inez Tenenbaum says she believes China “should do what is just and fair” and accept responsibility if their products are at fault.
Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida, the state most affected by this problem, says he was frustrated by the slowness of the testing and with the initial findings. The CPSC results “defy common sense,” he says.
