What REALTORS® Say About the Good Neighbor Awards

Dear REALTOR® Magazine:If the Annual Good Neighbor Awards isn't the most popular series for your publication, I'd sure like to know what is! Thank you so much for shining light on the faces of these special Realtors, who selflessly give of their time and energy to help others in need. By your recognizing their charitable efforts so prominently, you also spread the feelings of good will and compassion throughout this great country of ours. A hearty congratulations to the winners, runners up and nearly 300 nominees. We can only hope their efforts will serve as genuine inspiration for us all, to do more for the betterment of our own communities.

What Winners Say About Being a Good Neighbor

I have enjoyed a great deal of publicity as a result of being a Good Neighbor Award recipient. The continued publicity has allowed my association to be supportive and continue their bragging rights. When people view gifts that I have received from the Good Neighbor Awards it gives me an opportunity to tell them about my charitable organization.

Our goals have always been to give women in our community access to the very best medical care, one community at a time. The Good Neighbor Awards Program has increased the exposure of The Sport of Giving from our local community to a national audience. The inquiries that are flowing in to host events in other parts of the country have allowed us to launch events in 2010. Anyone with a passion to make a difference in their community can participate whether you are in Atlanta, Georgia or Seattle Washington. Our mission has become a reality thanks to the Good Neighbor Awards.

The 2003 Good Neighbor Award recognition has been the highlight of recognition I have ever received for my community service with the Renaissance Cultural Center and the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum. The visibility of the Good Neighbor Awards Program, REALTOR® Magazine and media exposure has heightened the awareness for both of these charities as new potential donors and volunteers have visited the web site, donated and volunteered.

The Good Neighbor Awards recognition has given Mt Juliet Help Center and me a blessing. We were able to do several upgrades including much needed flooring with the Lowe’s gift card. The visibility of the Good Neighbor Awards article in REALTOR® Magazine inspired a commercial REALTOR® in Pennsylvania to reach out and match a donation of $2,500. Occasionally, the weeks are long and the pantry shelves are half empty, but we live in a close knit "Good Neighbor" city. Thank you for the honor!

The Good Neighbor Awards recognition has been an honor in encouraging the recipient to continue the much needed work providing a positive needed fund. The Spanish Catholic Center have used the provided funds in their housing program and added the award to their grant submissions and other materials.

As a Good Neighbor it has helped me and Guardians Ad Litem across five counties. When a child had aged out last year we were able to show 2006 Good Neighbors’ “Bridge of Faith” article from California to the judges and help this young man finish high school and be appointed to West Point (he had been abused, placed in 11 different foster homes and 5 different high schools). He now is First Cadet Joshua Kelchner at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He is a Volunteer Award winner from President Bush for helping counseling other teens. Through Beds for Kids his guardian knew me and I was able to help and continue to support Josh in his efforts for the future.

Being named a Good Neighbor has brought more awareness to the wonderful work that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital does on a world-wide basis. REALTOR® Magazine coverage has provided numerous heartfelt calls, e-mails, and letters throughout the country from fellow REALTORS® congratulating me on my efforts with St. Jude. It is my hope that additional monies were contributed to help with research and treatment protocols that helped save children’s lives. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was very grateful and proud to be a recipient of the Good Neighbor Award.

As 2001 Good Neighbor Awards Winner it has been an honor, a challenge and a humbling experience to get recognized for the things that I would presume that every person in the world would want to do every single day for their fellow man. The Big Brothers/Big Sisters and The Children's Memorial Garden that I continue to work with have received lots of publicity and it has been invaluable towards the continued progression for each.

There is no doubt that the Good Neighbor Award brought about a lot of awareness of the great things that Realtors do for their communities. There were four articles in the Durango Herald and, being a tourist town, thousands of people from all over the country read about our work. One of the agencies I gave the grant money to was the Four Corners Nursing Home. I received a touching thank-you card from a Realtor in Missouri saying she had a relative in that nursing home. I heard from friends in real estate from Florida to Washington and from agents that I didn’t know. It's very important for all of us to remember that we can’t all do great things but we all can do small things in a great way.

As 2001 Good Neighbor Awards Winner for East Lubbock Special Angels it has been a treasure. The Good Neighbor Awards article and web site has provided the exposure to so many people to recycle and donate items to the needy of East Lubbock. I was able to sponsor several neighborhood cleanups with a college fraternity and encourage others to give of themselves when money has not been available on reasons to volunteer.

It was such an honor to receive the Honorable Mention Good Neighbor Award in 2003. The Good Neighbor Awards Program has given credibility to the Community Helping Schools non-profit organization when we applied for various levels of support and grants. A hundred percent of the monetary gift received was used to help the Hawaii public schools. This coming year, Community Helping School is taking a leap and will be gradually expanding to include all the public schools on Oahu.

Being affiliated with other like-minded leaders in different communities has created an available roundtable of great minds working together for the common good of our communities. It also gives me such a sense of pride to know that the National Association of REALTORS® recognizes the importance of these types of awards and it creates such great awareness for our individual causes.
