Amre Inc., operated as Century 21 Home Improvements, shuts its doors, letting some 3,000 employees go and liquidating its assets under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Henry Co. merges with The Prudential Metro Group, REALTORS®, to form The Prudential Alliance, REALTORS®, in St. Louis.
NAR establishes Large Brokerage Advisory Council.

The Counselors of Real Estate, an NAR affiliate, releases a survey ranking industrial real estate as the best investment for 1997, followed by suburban office space and apartments.
NAR Midwinter Business Meetings: HUD Undersecretary Nicolas Retsinas encourages REALTORS® to lead reform of federal Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act. At same meetings, NAR Board of Directors approves special funding for a campaign to reform the 1974 law.
National Realty Trust (now NRT), acquisition arm of HFS Inc., announces plans to move from Mission Viejo, Calif., to Parsippany, N.J., HFS’ headquarters.

In its annual compensation survey, Today’s REALTOR® reports NAR members’ median gross income from real estate rose about 14 percent--from $33,600 in 1995 to $38,300 in 1996. The median for female members went up 16 percent from 1995 to 1996.
Realty World, Irvine, Calif., announces it has stopped focusing on franchise sales and has formed a small-broker network.
