Shopping Glossary: GPS and Navigation Systems

If you're looking to buy a navigation system to use in your real estate business, here are some common words you'll encounter when shopping for one.

3D: An accurate rendering of a roadway, intersection or landmarks for a realistic screen view of the surrounding area, based on the present location.

ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival): An estimate of when you will reach a destination based on present location, travel speed and possibly area traffic conditions.

GPS: The “global positioning system” for pinpointing and tracking your location, using signals sent from at least three orbiting satellites.

POI: Points of interest, such as restaurants, businesses, gas stations, and other landmarks included with the map database and easily retrieved with directions based on your present location.

Traffic updates: Usually a subscription service that monitors area traffic congestion and relays that information to the GPS receiver with recommendations on alternate routes.

Triangulation: Pinpointing a location based on its relationship to three other locations. With GPS, those reference points are orbiting satellites; with cellular service, or area transmission towers.

Voice prompts: Spoken turn-by-turn directions, as opposed to text directions that appear on screen.
