7 Tips for Working With Volunteers
In many ways, working with volunteers is no different than managing any other business team.

1. Let volunteers know what you expect of them. Write a job description of each volunteer’s tasks and the skills required. Define the time required, with some flexibility built in, and what costs are involved.-- Nancy-Gar Rowland, RE/MAX of Atlanta, Atlanta

2. Don’t treat volunteers like the hired help. Encourage them to become involved in planning and innovation within the organization. They’ll stay longer.

3. Give new volunteers a mentor—a more experienced volunteer—to answer questions and offer training.

4. Build in flexibility so that volunteers can occasionally take time off; have substitutes you can call in an emergency.

5. Encourage volunteers to become involved in all aspects of the organization and share their ideas on ways processes can be improved.--Katherine Noyes Campbell and Susan J. Ellis, The (Help!) I Don’t Have Enough Time Guide to Volunteer Management,Energize Inc. 1995

6. Understand the legal and insurance issues relating to volunteers. Consult with your attorney to develop a policy on what activities volunteers are permitted to do. Consult with insurance agent on liability coverage.

7. Screen volunteers carefully to ensure a good match with the job and the group served.
