  PUBLIC SPEAKING

Nothing expands your circle of contacts more than speaking before groups in your community.

Where to Speak

· Senior citizen centers

· Condominium boards

· Health clubs

· Garden clubs

· School assemblies and clubs

· Book clubs

· Investment clubs

· Professional and cultural groups

TIP: To solicit speaking engagements, send a brief resume, a list of other speaking engagements, and two or three suggested topics to the program chair or president of each organization. Space speaking engagements out so that people don’t get tired of hearing from you.

What to Talk About: Pick a Topic That Fits Your Audience

· Homebuying for first-time buyers

· Preparing your home for sale

· Owning versus renting

· Selecting a second home

· Selecting a site for retirement

· Preparing your home for aging in place

· Renovations that pay off. Use the 2003 Cost vs. Value Report for tips.

· The fastest growing neighborhoods in your area

· New zoning or real estate-related regulations in your area

· Becoming a landlord; income from rental properties

TIP: Very few people are natural public speakers. Consider investing in a few sessions with a speech or drama coach from your local community college to improve your presentation.

TIP: If you’re not sure about public speaking, try it out by being part of a panel discussion. It’s less pressure since you’re not going solo.
