Core Standards

Local, state, and territorial associations of REALTORS®, as a condition of membership in the National Association of REALTORS®, must meet NAR’s Organizational Alignment Core Standards for State and Local Associations. The standards were approved by NAR’s Board of Directors in May 2014 and replace a previous set of organizational standards. The purpose of the new standards: to raise the bar for REALTOR® associations and ensure high-quality service for REALTORS®.

Human Resources Toolkit for Association Presidents

The Human Resources toolkit provides REALTOR® associations information and guidance on Employee Relations, Recruiting, and Legal Issues. Several elements of the toolkit are curated in a special section of the Human Resources toolkit: HR Toolkit - For Association Presidents. These resources are not exclusive to association presidents, but rather are beneficial to both AEs and state and local volunteer leadership.

Shared Services Toolkit

Shared services programs can help REALTOR® associations expand services and streamline management through strategic partnerships. Sharing services with other local associations can help all involved meet the Organizational Alignment Core Standards.

Chapter Formation Toolkit

With implementation of the Organizational Alignment Core Standards program, some local associations that are considering a merger may choose a “chapter” structure to preserve their identity. A chapter is a subunit of an existing, chartered local association of REALTORS®, with that association of REALTORS® being the only chartered (or recognized) entity.

Merger Toolkit

Local associations requesting a merger should view the Association Merger Procedure. NAR also has published a Merger Kit (PDF: 5.08 MB) and maintains a comprehensive Field Guide to Association Mergers and Partnerships to assist associations considering a merger.

Strategic Planning Toolkit

NAR's Core Standards for State and Local Associations require that all associations develop a strategic plan. The Strategic Planning Resources Toolkit will familiarize you with the strategic planning process, provide resources for you to pursue strategic planning at your association, and help you decide whether hiring a facilitator is the right path for your association.

Operation Procedures Checklist

This list of operational practices and procedures will serve as a quick reference for AEs and volunteer leaders looking for guidance in managing the REALTOR® association.
