Use these pointers from the Video Arts Group training video, “Meetings, Bloody Meetings” to deal with the disruptive forces that may surface in a meeting.

The talker. Loves to hear his own voice and rambles on.
Solution: Limit discussion to one minute per person.

The belligerent. Aggressively disagrees with every idea you have, to the disruption of the entire meeting.
Solution: Call a break and speak to the troublemaker privately.

The doodler. Drifts off and doesn’t pay attention or participate.
Solution: Keep calling on this person for his opinion until he’s forced to listen.

The interrupter. Jumps right in with the same point no matter who is talking or what is being said.
Solution: Tell him to raise the point at the end of the meeting. Say, “Yes, I think you made that point already.”

The wanderer. Goes off on tangents and gets the discussion off track.
Solution: Interrupt and bring the meeting back to the agenda.
