How to Make Time for Volunteering

· Pick a day and stick to it no matter what. If you schedule volunteer work for Saturday at 4:00 and someone calls you and wants you to list their property, tell them you can meet at 2 or 8. You may lose a listing but you’ll be true to your values.--Oral Lee Brown, 2000 Good Neighbor Awards Winner

· Combine your volunteer activities with something you enjoy or that is meaningful to you. I wanted to train for a triathlon, so I combined that personal goal with a fundraising effort by having people sponsor me on behalf the Tomorrow Fund for children with cancer.--Ronald Phipps, 2001 Good Neighbor Awards Honorable Mention

· Start small, don’t feel as if you have to solve all the world’s problems. Every small thing you do makes a difference.--Jill Rich, 2000 Good Neighbor Awards Winner

· Get more organized; juggling projects gets easier with practice.--Jill Rich, 2000 Good Neighbor Awards Winner

· Make a monthly schedule and write in time for volunteering, just as you would for every other activity. And don’t cancel.--Ronald Phipps, 2001 Good Neighbor Awards Honorable Mention

· For the truly time pressed, volunteer over the Internet at Virtual Volunteering.
