From the May Magazine:
Celebrating 100 Years of the American Dream
This special issue of REALTOR® magazine is adapted from the book NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®: 100 Years in Celebration of the American Dream. The book takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of organized real estate in the United States, and introduces you to the giants who gave shape to the industry.
The Start of Something Big
Honest real estate brokers had been trying to organize for decades to protect themselves and their customers from unscrupulous practitioners. Finally in May 1908, 120 delegates assembled in Chicago to found a lasting association.
Homeownership in America
From the start, the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® has worked closely within the real estate industry, with the federal government and with the banking business, to smooth the way for more American families to own a home.
A Commercial Tale
NAR’s 120 founding fathers saw no reason to separate commercial real estate from the residential practice. But as commercial brokerage became a specialty over the decades, NAR looked for innovative ways to support it.
The More Things Change . . .
The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® has thrived for 100 years by staying true to course on key issues including the drive to increase homeownership, the effort to keep banks out of real estate, and efforts to expand the FHA.
