20 Tips for a Successful Meeting

Improve Participation in Meetings

Team-Building Techniques

Handling Problem Participants
  Team-Building Techniques
Sales meetings aren’t only about learning a specific topic. They also provide an opportunity for sales associates to get to know each other, share ideas, and learn to cooperate as a team. Use some of these exercises to help build company spirit.

· Create a group resume that lists and celebrates everyone’s achievements.

· Divide participants into small groups and ask each group to spend 10 minutes creating a 30-second ad, complete with visual and marketing line. Have each group present its ad to the meeting.
· Divide the participants into groups and give each group 20 blank index cards. Ask each group to build its dream house in 10 minutes using only the cards. Cards can be folded or torn, but no other tools can be used. Ask each group to describe its house idea. Avoid any competitive comparisons among the houses.

· Divide participants into small groups and ask each group to draw a four-panel cartoon about a problem related to the meeting topic. At the end of the meeting, discuss ways that the discussion has helped find answers to those problems.

Three Fun Exercises
In the high-pressure world of real estate, have a little fun and learn a little too, with these exercises.

Exercise 1: Focusing on the “YOU
1. Divide participants into pairs.

2. Tell each pair to pick a topic and talk about it for two minutes without once using the word “I”.

3. Afterwards, ask participants how they refocused their communication skills toward the other person.

Exercise 2: Take Me High
1. Ask for a volunteer to extend an arm and reach as high as he can. Place a piece of tape or a mark at that point.

2. Now tell the volunteer to really reach high.

3. Show participants how much a mark can be surpassed if you really stretch.

Exercise 3: Queen for a Day
1. Create a selection of index cards with fake identities on them—a millionaire, a college professor, an airplane pilot. Have enough identities for everyone at the meeting.

2. Give each person an “identity” card.

3. Divide participants into pairs.

4. Tell each member of the pair to ask questions about the other’s identity for one minute.

5. After the question, seek how many people guess the identity correctly.

6. Give prizes to those who asked the best questions.

Some of the team building exercises in this section were adapted from Even More Games Trainers Play, by Edward E. Scannell and John W. Newstrom (McGraw-Hill, Inc., 1994; $19.96).
