No other people in the world can match Americans' philanthropic impulse. We do more and give more to help others and special interests than anyone in the world.

If you’ve identified an important, unmet need in your community, chances are others will want to join you. If you want to help one homeless person, you can probably make the private personal commitment necessary to do that. If you want to help all the homeless people in your area, you'll most likely need to gather considerable human and financial resources. And that’s usually the purpose of a nonprofit organization.

U.S. charitable activities are generally well defined and organized. The more you know about the formal mechanics of charitable organizations and how they sustain themselves, the more you’ll be able to make sound, fulfilling choices when leading your own efforts.

Like everything else, doing good is just a little harder and more complicated these days!
