  The Power of One

In a State of the Union address, President George W. Bush called for all Americans to devote 4,000 hours or two years of their lifetime to volunteer service. This may seem like an overwhelming request, but Americans have huge hearts and immense capacity for contributing not only their dollars but a significant amount of personal time to charitable causes.

Take a look at the statistics and consider how important volunteers can be to the fulfillment of your organization’s mission.

The number of individuals volunteering is impressive.

According to a 2001 national survey by Independent Sector:
  • 44 percent of adult Americans volunteered with a formal organization in 2000.
  • 69 percent of them volunteered on a regular basis, monthly or more frequently.
  • The total number of adult volunteers was gauged to be 83.9 million people.

The time they commit is impressive, too.
  • The total number of hour volunteered by individuals in 2000 was 15.5 billion.
  • The average number of hours volunteered per individual on a weekly basis was 3.6.

Most notable is the value of their time.
  • The estimated value of volunteer time in 2003 was $17.19 per hour, according to Independent Sector.
  • And the total value of volunteer time was $266 billion.
