2007 Volunteer Leadership Self-Study Work Group Report
AEC VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP SELF-STUDY WORK GROUP
MEETING SUMMARY
2007
Work Group objective
To develop a self-study course that provides volunteer REALTOR® association leaders with an overview of REALTOR® association management policies and programs to enhance their leadership skills and abilities in preparation for their leadership term.
Background
AEC leadership discussed the common AE topic of preparing volunteers to be leaders, and determined that developing strong volunteer leadership at the local and state levels serves the REALTOR® community well in a broad manner. This work group was formed in 2006 to address this initiative. It was determined that the make-up of the workgroup should include both AEs and past presidents of local REALTOR® associations to best assess content and delivery of the course.
The 2006 work group determined that because of a diverse need in the field, such a course would be rolled out in three phases. The first phase would include six topic areas that were identified as being the most basically important areas for volunteer leadership to be aware. Those six topic areas include: meeting management, visioning/planning/budgeting, working with volunteers, legal & regulatory, real estate issues & trends, and governing documents & policy. The group began identifying the competencies to be taught in each subject area, and determined that the course would be delivered as an online self-study course.
Meeting activity
The work group had previously identified the following possible choices for a course name; the first choice was confirmed as the course name:
o REAL – REALTORS® Excelling in Association Leadership
o ROLE – REALTOR® Online Leadership Education
The work group discussed the desired end result of the program and the work that had been completed to-date. The prototype ‘Meeting Management’ chapter was reviewed, and the group agreed that the chapter appears to be the correct length and the questions are the appropriate level of difficulty. The group agreed to roll out modules in the following order:
· Enhancing Leadership Skills (the former Working with Volunteers)
· Meeting Management
· Legal and Regulatory
· Governing Documents and Policies
· Real Estate Trends and Issues
· Visioning, Planning and Budgeting
The group also discussed marketing plans for the course, and determined the following outlets should be used:
· INS Report
· Article in REALTOR® Association Executive magazine
· Letter from EVP Dale Stinton to state AEs; from President Pat V. Combs to local presidents
· AE Institute
· Target state associations who conduct broker training
· Target those who have been tapped already from leadership
Work group members asked if there could be a link to the NAR profile, and whether the system can generate an email to the AE when a member registers or completes the course. Staff will research those requests.
Finally, the group recognized the need to ensure that those who finish the course are rewarded for their time and effort, through appointments on local/state/NAR committees, blurbs in local newspapers, or in REALTOR® Magazine.
Next Steps
Individual work groups will each finalize a homework assignment to include an updated competency, an Answer Book chapter flagged as to information to be included, and pertinent questions. Questions will either be taken from the current REALTOR® Association Management (RAM) Self- Study course, or will be newly written.
